Porcelain paving FAQs
Porcelain paving is a popular way to create garden patios and outdoor entertaining spaces. As a premium paving option, its versatility makes it suitable for both traditional and modern outdoor spaces.
Choosing the right paving is crucial when it comes to creating a space that is long-lasting and serves your needs. Is it slippery when wet? Is it hard to clean? Is it family friendly?
Here are the 5 key things that we think you should know before you buy porcelain paving.
Here are the 10 most commonly asked questions we get about porcelain paving:
1. Does porcelain scratch or stain?
Porcelain paving is highly stain and scratch resistant. Our Vitripiazza porcelain paving slabs will not stain as easily as other paving due to its very low porosity. So it’s perfect for families.
2. Is porcelain paving slippery?
Porcelain paving has a high slip-resistance, even in the wet, due to very low moisture absorption. This makes it a great option for multi-generational families.
3. How do you clean porcelain paving?
Porcelain paving is easy to clean and is extremely low maintenance. Regular brushing with a normal bristled brush will help keep it clean. But for a general clean, just a bucket of soapy water and a brush will do. There is no need to use any chemicals or harsh bleaches.
4. Can you pressure wash a porcelain patio?
Although most porcelain patios will need no more than a brush and some soapy water, using a pressure washer can be a great way to clean a patio that is in need of a deep clean.
Pressure washers are safe to use on a porcelain patio, but you’re advised to:
- Only use the fan setting
- Hold the nozzle approximately 30cm – 45cm away from the surface
- Use a rotary patio head (if available)
5. Will cold weather damage my porcelain paving?
No. Porcelain is highly resistant to severe weather changes including heat, frost and cold. Your porcelain patio will also be unaffected by sunlight, so the colour won’t fade.
6. What is porcelain paving made from?
Porcelain isn’t as fragile as it sounds. It’s actually is a manmade, hard-wearing ceramic that’s tough and durable.
Porcelain paving slabs are made from natural materials such as highly refined and purified clay and finely ground sand.
Our Vitripiazza porcelain paving is produced when these materials are sintered through firing in kilns in excess of 1200ºC. Compacting the elements then closes the pores and gives the porcelain its excellent technical properties that enable it to be the perfect paving.
7. Can porcelain paving slabs be used for driveways?
Porcelain paving slabs can be used for driveways, but only particular types.
“Full-bodied” porcelain paving slabs are suitable for driveways that have traffic from domestic cars and light vans. An adequate concrete base and bonding will be required.
Our Bellezza Lite porcelain paving slabs are full-bodied, so are therefore suitable for driveway use.

The best flooring to achieve that flow from inside to outside is porcelain.
Porcelain paving slabs are incredibly versatile. You can lay them in the kitchen/dining area, conservatory and garden. We see this trend time and time again on housebuilder plans as well as extension drawings.
