What is the difference between topsoil and compost?
The key things to remember about topsoil and compost are:
- Topsoil is the uppermost layer of ground, providing the structure and base that plants root into.
- Compost is decomposed organic matter, rich in nutrients, used to enrich and feed soil to help plant growth.
What is landscaping bark used for?
Landscaping bark is a versatile garden material used to cover and protect soil in beds, borders, and pathways. Landscaping bark is great for:
- Weed suppression — a layer of bark reduces light reaching the soil, inhibiting weed growth
- Moisture retention — bark slows evaporation, helping soil stay hydrated for longer
- Temperature regulation — it insulates plant roots against frost and heat
- Decorative finish — bark gives borders and planting areas a clean, natural appearance
We stock amenity bark for general use and eco bark as a more sustainably sourced alternative.
Frequently Asked Questions about topsoil and landscaping bark
How much topsoil do I need?
To work out how much topsoil you’ll need to:
- Measure the length and width of the area you want to cover
- Then multiply by the depth you're applying
- typically 100–150mm for a new lawn
- or up to 300mm for new beds and borders
For example: a 5m x 4m area at 150mm depth = 3 cubic metres of topsoil.
As a general guide:
- Our 800kg bulk bags cover approximately 0.5–0.6m³
- Our 500L bulk bags (Rolawn) cover approximately 0.5m³
