Frequently asked questions about manhole covers
Which manhole cover load class do I need?
For a standard home driveway, a B125 (up to 12.5T) or C250 (up to 25T) cover is typically sufficient. For a road or commercial area, you'll need a D400 cover rated to 40T. Light pedestrian areas only require an A15.
What's the difference between a recessed and a solid top manhole cover?
A recessed (or pavior) manhole cover has a tray that you fill with block paving or gravel, so it blends in with the surrounding surface. These are perfect for driveways and gardens where a seamless finish is desired.
Solid top manhole covers are flat steel or iron plates — simpler to install and suited to concrete or tarmac driveways.
What sizes are manhole covers available in?
The most common sizes are 600×450mm (rectangular) and 600×600mm (square). We also stock 300×300mm and 450×450mm covers. Always measure the clear opening of your existing frame before ordering.
