- Concrete block paving in the standard 200 × 100mm format, available in 50mm (for patios and pedestrian areas) and 60mm (for driveways and areas subject to vehicle loads)
- Permeable block paving, which allows rainwater to drain naturally through the joints into a granular sub-base. These are a sustainable drainage solution, also known as SuDS, that typically requires no planning permission for residential driveways

Popular colours include charcoal and brindle, which remain the most in-demand shades for driveways. For a more contemporary look, silver haze and slate tones are growing in popularity.

Frequently asked questions about block paving and cobble setts
What is the difference between 50mm and 60mm block paving?
50mm block paving is suitable for pedestrian areas such as patios, paths and garden spaces. 60mm block paving is the standard choice for driveways and any area that will bear the weight of vehicles, as the extra depth provides greater load-bearing strength and durability.
Do I need planning permission for block paving a driveway?
In most cases, you do not need planning permission to block pave your front driveway if you use permeable block paving, as rainwater drains through the surface naturally.
If you use standard (non-permeable) block paving, you will need to ensure drainage runs off to an appropriate area. You may find that permitted development rules require you to apply for permission. We always recommend checking with your local authority before starting work.
What is permeable block paving?
Permeable block paving is designed with slightly wider joints filled with a grit or aggregate material, allowing rainwater to drain through the surface into a granular sub-base below. This reduces surface run-off, helps prevent localised flooding and meets Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) requirements.
How many block paving bricks do I need per square metre?
For the standard 200 × 100mm block, you will need approximately 50 bricks per square metre. For 100 × 100mm blocks, you will need approximately 100 per square metre.

What block paving laying patterns can I use?
The most common patterns are herringbone (45° or 90°), basketweave and stretcher bond.
Herringbone is the strongest pattern for driveways as the interlocking arrangement distributes vehicle loads effectively and prevents individual blocks from shifting. Basketweave and stretcher bond are popular for patios and paths.
