I-Joists vs Timber Joists

Carcassing timber has traditionally been the choice for use in floor or roof joist structures. However I-joists are now becoming a great alternative.

An I-Joist is an engineered wood joist, designed to eliminate the problems that occur when using timber joists.

I-joists are quick and easy to install and do not distort or split like traditional joists. With virtually no shrinkage, there is little risk of developing bouncy or squeaky floors.

How cost and time effective can it be to use I-Joists over traditional timber joists?

The infographic on this page shows the material and time saved by using I-joists based on example floor drawing.

The number of joists required is less then half with no need for washers and bolts and a 75% reduction on the amount of hangers needed when compared with using timber joists.

This then reflects in the install times, which goes a long way to showing why more and more builds are swaying towards using I-Joists.
